Syd (00:01.111)

Alright, so you're listening to another episode and we are here with Roseanne. Go ahead and introduce yourself and tell us a little bit about who you are.

Roseann (00:10.444)

Hi, I'm Roseanne Harpold. I'm the founder of HauntFest LLC. I've been on here once before, but HauntFest is a Halloween slash horror convention that goes all year round. That's who I am.

Syd (00:26.594)

Thank you for sharing. So what is haunt fest and the other events that you have and what are coming up?

Roseann (00:34.702)

So HauntFest is kind of a big Halloween party of sorts. We have all sorts of different activities, some interactive things like animal encounters, can hold snakes or kittens in Halloween costumes, or you could paint pumpkins or listen to music or see vendors or sometimes we have special appearances. So it's more than just a normal convention. Each one that we do has a different title because it's in a different area or it's a different time, a different year.

so we've had HauntFest Mayhem in May of 2023, HauntFest April Ghouls in April, 2024. And now we're onto our third event, which is HauntFest, September to Dismember, which is going to be in Arden, North Carolina. It's our first out of state event. So very excited.

Syd (01:20.407)

really cool. Nice. I remember you talking about that last time how you're wanting to venture out more so it's really cool to hear that that's actually happening. So that's really cool. So when and where is it exactly?

Roseann (01:30.039)

yeah.

Roseann (01:35.63)

So this upcoming event is at a venue called Lutherage Camp and Conference Center, which is actually a Lutheran -based summer camp, which is super interesting. Everyone's been really awesome and excited about this event. But it's this venue in Arden, North Carolina. It's very close to Asheville, very cool town. But it's a very interesting venue. It offers a lot of things that we haven't had before.

Like there's a small lake, there's cabins, lots of opportunity for people to stay the weekend and a huge haunted trail. So really excited about this new area.

Syd (02:15.439)

So I pretty much like make a whole entire event out of it. Like stay the night and everything. That's pretty cool. Are you gonna have monsters and stuff roaming when people are sleeping?

Roseann (02:19.498)

Absolutely. Yeah.

Roseann (02:25.934)

I mean if you go to bed early, yeah. I mean the event will end at midnight so they'll be out until midnight. know, unless you want to come back at the witching hour when you're not paying attention.

Syd (02:30.843)

You

Syd (02:34.674)

wow, that's crazy.

Syd (02:39.035)

So I saw on Facebook you have a thing with billboards. Can you tell us a little bit about that?

Roseann (02:44.364)

Yeah, so we tried the billboards for the first time in Athens, Georgia. We didn't get a huge response from billboards and I've heard that from some other haunts around the area, but I figured since Arden is a completely new area, I'd never tried digital billboards before and I don't live out there, so it's a lot easier to try things that I can send online out there. So we tried two new billboards in

Syd (03:07.974)

Yeah.

Roseann (03:12.054)

the Asheville area and I'm not going to tell you where they are because we currently have a scavenger hunt of sorts so if you can find both billboards you get some prizes if you find one you get I think it's a free haunted trail ticket and then if you find both you get a free haunted trail ticket and a free paddleboat or canoe ride because there's you the lake at this venue so

Syd (03:15.931)

you

Syd (03:36.653)

That's totally cool, yeah, because I saw that and so I wanted to ask about that. That seems pretty interesting, a scavenger hunt. I like that idea. So what kind of haunt stuff will you have at this event?

Roseann (03:43.18)

No.

Roseann (03:49.358)

So as far as haunting goes, of course we have our free roaming ghouls which are always fun. So they're there for anyone to take pictures with. They may, you know, spook you when you're not paying attention. You're looking at some cool stuff. So that'll be happening all day except on Sunday which is more family friendly. So they'll come out later at night, I think 6 p and there'll be a lot more tame, a lot more family friendly ghouls. And then as far as the Haunted Trail, that'll start at 8 p

on each day. So it's Friday, Saturday and Sunday, September 13th through 15th. And you can go sit at some pews, hear the whole story, be taken off into the woods. And at the top of the hill, there is a huge haunted house that you'll go through as well as the haunts throughout the woods. So it's a nice combination of outdoor and indoor haunt this year. We're very excited.

Syd (04:42.051)

that sounds fun. That sounds cool. So who are some of the vendors that you have for this time?

Roseann (04:48.13)

So we have all sorts of new vendors given this is a new area and a few returning from Athens actually that'll be staying the weekend. So a couple that I'm especially excited about, we've never had live classes before. I've tried, but we haven't had like a great area for it. And this venue has some really perfect spots for live classes. So we have a couple witches that are coming and they'll be doing live classes. One of the vendors is the witch of Torea.

Or the witch of Teria. I'm not quite sure which one and another is let's see Sorry, I should have this one memorized I was just moon magic moon magic right underneath I wasn't looking in the right spot And they're also doing terror readings and all sorts of things as well We've got the guy that does forging on site. He's coming back and doing some fire shows

Syd (05:28.781)

no, you're fine.

Roseann (05:46.55)

and then lots of art, lots of oddities, lemonade stands, a coffee stand, we'll have food as well. And right now we're in the process of trying to find some tattoo artists. We'll see how that goes. Well, we've gotten some interest, but no one for sure just yet. So lots of new aspects to this, which I'm super, super thrilled to have that.

Syd (06:08.261)

Wow, it sounds like you have a lot going on. That's pretty cool. So that kind of leads me into the next question, which do you have any spots for vendors available still? And if so, how can they become a vendor?

Roseann (06:21.228)

Yes, absolutely. This space is super big, a lot of room for all sorts of things. So even if you have a juggling act or something, please feel free to reach out to us. But yes, if you would like to be a vendor, you can go to hauntfest .net and there's a vendor info page where you can apply for any of our three upcoming events. So we have this event, which is September 13th through 15th, which is a September to December.

In December, we have one called Chris Massacre that'll be in Greenville, South Carolina. And then in April 2025, we'll have another Athens event, another April Ghouls. So any of those three, that's how you'll be signing up. But yeah, please do tell all your friends. And a quick note too, if you're an author, a horror author or thriller author,

Syd (07:02.075)

that's cool.

Roseann (07:14.19)

we are really looking for people who want to do ghost stories around the fire. We did that at our last event. It was a hit. mean, I really wasn't sure how it would go. And there was a huge crowd listening to these people that were reading their original work. And it was really exciting to see. So if anyone wants to do the horror stories or the ghost stories that were on the fire, we're doing 50 % off of vendor booths for authors who sign up for at least three spots per day that they're there.

Syd (07:18.329)

that's cool.

Roseann (07:43.202)

So please reach out to us at hauntfest .gmail .com. Sorry, hauntfestinfo. What is it? What is my email? What's happening? Hauntfestofficial. Hauntfestofficial .gmail .com if you would like to take us up on that option. Sorry about that. It's a long day.

Syd (07:45.701)

you

Syd (08:01.393)

That's a good idea. No, yeah, and trust me, it's getting to be that season. It's already starting, so I can empathize with that. So how is this event run? Do you have volunteers for this one too? And if so, how can one become a volunteer? And do you have any perks for the volunteers?

Roseann (08:09.006)

you

Roseann (08:12.778)

Yeah.

Roseann (08:24.366)

So yes, we do have volunteer and paid positions available this year. We're finally getting our feet off the ground and there's of course still, it's a little limited to how many are paid, but you can choose in the application if it's volunteer only, paid only or volunteer unless there's no, or sorry, paid unless there's no spots and then you can be a volunteer. So that's up to you, but there is a page on our website.

Syd (08:36.902)

Yeah.

Roseann (08:52.43)

called job applications and that is where you can sign up to be a scare actor, event staff, I think those might be the only two options. But yeah, those applications are right there. There's just buttons you click and it'll take you right to the application. But we need all the hands we can get and scare actors are always fun. So if you volunteer, there's lots of different perks. One of them is that you get a free spot in the volunteer cabin. If you want to stay all weekend, you get

Syd (09:09.019)

Yeah

Roseann (09:22.2)

free weekend passes, so even if you come volunteer for one day, you'll have passes for the rest of the weekend. So you could come back out and hang out. You get a free Honda trail ticket, and we'll have refreshments and things for volunteers as well.

Syd (09:25.892)

I hope.

Syd (09:36.773)

That's really cool, wow. So even if you don't get paid, you still get something out of it. Plus, it's a good experience and hopefully you'll make friends and opportunities will arise. So, for sure, that's really cool. I bet. That's good, that's good. That makes a big difference when you have a good team. It really does. And it makes it more fun as well. What kind of entertainment will you have and who are some of the entertainers?

Roseann (09:46.98)

yeah, it's a lot of fun. We have a good team.

Roseann (10:00.242)

yeah.

Roseann (10:04.974)

So right now we are in the midst of locking down all the musicians. So I don't want to release that just yet. We're switching people around right now, but I am very excited about the lineup. We had over 75 applicants for this event for musicians, which is, it was a lot to listen to and a lot of really fun artists. So I'm really excited about that. I think we'll have about six to seven bands per day and then about three or so solo artists as well.

Syd (10:20.176)

wow.

Roseann (10:34.126)

that'll be in the Lake Pavilion. And then as far as other entertainment, we have our first magician, Zeke Powers. I can say who that is, since we've got him. He does a lot of paranormal things, like I think he... I don't know if he talks to ghosts or summons ghosts, but he does a lot of stuff with his magic that's all very dark -spirited. And then Cyanide Suspension is coming back, which I'm thrilled about. They do...

Syd (10:36.721)

That's cool.

Syd (10:43.034)

Nice.

Syd (10:59.557)

Hahaha

Roseann (11:01.688)

freak shows and aerial acts and they do a flesh hook suspension which in North Carolina is allowed so this will be the first time that they can actually do flesh hook suspension at our events it's not allowed in Georgia so I'll be real real excited to see how that works out if you want to yeah if you want to see some body horror this will be the time to do it

Syd (11:15.773)

wow.

Syd (11:20.015)

That sounds like that will be a lot of fun.

Syd (11:27.151)

Yeah, when I worked at Rob Zombie's Great American Nightmare down here in Phoenix, they had some of those and it was like close to, I want to say the probably like the last two nights or three nights and they had this huge like, I don't even know what it was, but it was just this really big kind of like a almost like a crane and I was like, what is that? Because I was out in the midway and I was like

Roseann (11:31.874)

Mm

Roseann (11:48.375)

Mm -hmm.

Syd (11:51.483)

What is this for? And then I was just walking around being a character and then all of sudden I see people, like you said, hanging over him like, what is going on? Like no one told us that that was gonna happen or anything so I was like, okay, that's happening. So, but I mean it is, very interesting to watch and they were up there for a long time just hanging by their back and you're just like, I was just walking around like, my goodness. I was not ready for that.

Roseann (12:04.268)

You

Roseann (12:10.304)

yeah.

Roseann (12:14.966)

Yeah, I mean, they're signed up for, yeah, they're actually signed up for four consecutive hours. And they said that's how they prefer to do it is to be on there longer because, know, you have to make a new piercing every time when you. So, yeah, that was crazy.

Syd (12:25.967)

Yeah, every time. That's just crazy. I mean, hey, the more power to you, if that's a talent you have, then let your freak flag fly, you know? So you did talk a little bit about the haunted trail, but what is the haunted trail? And again, you kind of also said how people can get involved. But if they're wanting to get involved, it would be through the website then, right?

Roseann (12:37.006)

Exactly.

Roseann (12:52.224)

Yeah, if you're wanting to be a scare actor or a trail leader, we're really looking for trail leaders. Anyone who has any sort of acting experience, we're trying to make this a little bit more interactive as far as the story goes. And it's a really fun story. I'm really excited about the story. It's kind of tied in with the venue. And I'll just keep it at that. I'm...

Syd (13:17.733)

Hahaha

Roseann (13:17.876)

Excited to have have new people get involved in this one. If you are into some freaky stuff, this will be a real fun one to get in get into. But yeah, you have the option of spooking in the woods on the way to the haunted house, or you can be in the house, which will be a lot of fun as well. We're hoping to have separate rooms, so there'll be some different themes within, but all tied into the the main story.

Syd (13:24.347)

You

Roseann (13:46.05)

But yeah, if you are interested in being a line leader or a storyteller, those are huge right now. Big, big things that we're needing. And we've got a few, few inquiries, but we can always use some more trail leaders to keep things going smoothly, you know?

Syd (14:02.043)

That's crazy. So do you actually go and set up all of it too? Like the sets and the props and all that? So do you all go in or do you have a team that helps you with that too?

Roseann (14:11.222)

It depends on the event. So the very first year we did this crazy like just hanging plastic up to make tunnels and things outside. And then last year we actually had a haunt called Lake Joy Trails of Terror who reached out to us and they were like, hey, do y 'all need any help with the trail? And they didn't ask for anything. They just showed up and like straight up set it up, brought a bunch of actors. so that

That's something we're looking into for next year for Athens is working with them again so they can help set it up. Because it's a huge thing to take on. A haunted house is a whole thing in itself and then to also do the festival is difficult. But because this event is in September and it's so close to haunt season, that's some of the haunted attractions first weekends. So we can't...

Syd (14:46.54)

yeah, that's a lot of work.

Syd (14:57.83)

Yeah.

Syd (15:04.069)

Yeah.

Roseann (15:06.018)

really do that same partnership for this event. So this time it is all us. I've been having to source things from some crazy places. We'll be taking some trucks, you know, over two and a half hours away to get there because I don't live in Asheville. But yeah, it'll be a feat that hopefully we can accomplish.

Syd (15:13.548)

Ha ha ha ha.

Syd (15:22.107)

Yeah.

Syd (15:28.205)

Yeah, haunts are a lot of work. That's why I was curious. I was like, you run the event and do the haunt. That's a lot of work. yeah. Yeah, that's true. It's like you love it, but at the same time you're like, my goodness, how am I gonna do this?

Roseann (15:35.06)

It's fun though. It's just it's a little stressful, but it's good stress sometimes, you know

Roseann (15:46.562)

It's kind of funny. This is a little bit messed up and selfish of me, but I I have kovat currently I'm stuck at home. I just found out yesterday, but Honestly, that was one of the biggest reliefs of my life because now I have so much time to plan now I can sit at home and get ready for haunt vest and now I'm so much less stressed about it But yeah, there's always so much to do. So the haunt is a is a huge part of it I'm starting to work on that now that I'm

Syd (15:53.677)

no.

Roseann (16:15.293)

I'm locked inside.

Syd (16:16.579)

Yeah, it's like it's a good thing but a bad thing. yeah, I can get that. So what are some of the activities that you're gonna have for kids and families?

Roseann (16:20.18)

Yeah, exactly.

Roseann (16:28.494)

So the pumpkin painting that we did in April Ghouls was a huge hit. We had no pumpkins left at the end. So we're doing that again. So we'll have all sorts of paints and tiny little pumpkins that'll be free to paint. And then if you want, you can paint bigger ones and those will be, I think it's five or $10, depending on the size. So there's some that are ceramic and they're like sugar skulls. And then there's some that are like big plastic pumpkins. So that's something.

Syd (16:35.909)

Hahaha

Syd (16:50.929)

That's cool.

Roseann (16:55.8)

We'll have lots of new games. I've been really excited coming up with games now that we have a full family friendly day. Something like, you know, three legged race or, you know, maybe racing on broomsticks. That'd be fun. You know, like witches or I'm thinking I'm playing around with the idea. It may be too much of a liability, but of doing a hide and seek with our actual scare actor because that would scare.

Syd (17:02.971)

Yeah.

Syd (17:09.083)

Well, there you go.

Syd (17:21.756)

that's cool.

Roseann (17:24.172)

the crap out of me if I were a kid, but I'd love it. but yeah, there's lots of things like that, as well as the venue having the canoeing and paddle boarding, that'll be available, fun, family friendly thing to do. And then the shows, of course, they've been informed that it's more family friendly. So, Sinai Suspension will be doing their aerial acts rather than their body horror acts that day, we'll have the magician there doing more family friendly things that day, so.

Syd (17:47.275)

man.

Roseann (17:51.95)

Lots of of fun stuff and of course the vendors too if there's anyone that's specifically Family or kid related they'll be there on Sunday as well

Syd (17:55.813)

Mm

Syd (18:01.489)

Well, that's cool. That's good, because I know that there are, you know, there's also families that like to do things during the holidays as well or close to it, so it's good that you have stuff for that as well. So where can we purchase tickets? I'm assuming the website. And what are the price ranges or the prices?

Roseann (18:08.334)

We'll be

Roseann (18:19.006)

Yes, so it will still be hauntfest .net. There's a buy tickets button, I believe, at the top of the homepage, but also there's a page for each of the upcoming events. So there's North Carolina, South Carolina, and Georgia, and there's buy ticket buttons there as well. right now, the... Let me check so I don't put my foot in my mouth here.

Syd (18:42.138)

You

Roseann (18:43.534)

The pre -sale tickets are $20 just general admission, which includes all the bands, all the shows, anything that's just out in the open. So vendors. Let's see. Yeah. I mean, all of the entertainment and things are included in that. The haunted trail is $10 a ticket. So it's much cheaper than any other, you know, haunted attraction ticket, but it's also you have to consider the, you know, the admission as well. So.

Syd (19:06.755)

yeah, yeah.

Roseann (19:11.606)

It's just kind of tacked on there. And there are a lot of RIP options. So, you know, really important people tickets that you can get. There are all sorts of different tiers and they include different things. So some may include a campsite or a cabin. Some include the canoeing or let's see. You can get a lot of different perks depending on which level you get. Yeah.

Syd (19:36.969)

one you get. So you have different packages in a way for people. that's cool. So if they're really interested or like you said they want to spend like the whole week in there they can get cabins and all that. that's pretty cool. That's a nice location.

Roseann (19:48.387)

yeah. And of course, yeah. And of course the tickets are cheaper if you get all three days, you know, it knocks off some each time you, you add on a day to your ticket. So, keep that in mind. We want you there all weekend. It'll be fun.

Syd (19:55.43)

Yeah.

Syd (20:03.11)

Well plus you might miss something depending on again how big it is and how much you have you might miss something or miss a vendor or a show so in a lot of ways it's better to go all three days because then you can plan to kind of see everything

Roseann (20:10.734)

Mm

Roseann (20:15.79)

Yeah, for sure. And there's so much to do. mean, especially even if we get the tattoo artists, know, that's how long that would take, but that's a good chunk of time. can go paddle, paddle boat for 30 minutes. You can go watch a show for an hour and, know, you can hop around. And if it were me, I would want to go all three days, have one day that's all entertainment related. You just hang out, a drink, you know, see all the things another day that's all shopping, you know, so there's lots of

Syd (20:18.277)

Mm

Yeah.

Syd (20:38.202)

Yeah.

Roseann (20:45.12)

opportunity. and another day that's all classes because we've got a ton of classes now. So yeah, there's tons of time that can be spent here and I would highly recommend doing that. Yeah, especially with, you know, you bring your group of friends, your family, y 'all hang out, spend time together, you know, get a cabin.

Syd (20:46.405)

Yeah. Yeah.

Syd (20:54.607)

I'm sure. You don't want to miss out on anything.

Syd (21:01.201)

Mm -hmm.

Syd (21:06.34)

So what should like what should others know before they go do you have any advice or anything like that?

Roseann (21:13.646)

hmm. Well, if you have epilepsy, there's probably going to be some flashing lights. I'll warn you there. Bring closed -toed shoes. Bring cash. I will warn you, the ticketing is going to be interesting. We may need to be taking tickets as you pull in with your car because of a parking situation. So just be prepared. Have your tickets ready as you're pulling in, just in case we have ticket people at the window.

Syd (21:17.915)

You

Syd (21:23.286)

Yeah.

Roseann (21:43.928)

But yeah, parking is a little up in the air. have field parking that's going to be available, but only if it doesn't rain. So if it does rain, like within a certain time period of the event, we're going to have parking offsite in a shuttle that'll take you inside. So hopefully that doesn't happen. The field parking should work. That's the plan. But just so you all know, that is something that could change. But that's on our website and we will have parking attendance there.

Syd (21:52.337)

you

Syd (22:00.696)

Okay.

Roseann (22:12.204)

That's just the big warning. But otherwise, bring closed -toed shoes. There'll be a waiver fee to sign all the things that we normally have done. But yeah.

Syd (22:14.777)

Yeah.

Syd (22:19.877)

Hehehe.

Syd (22:24.763)

So, like, do you have advice what should I wear or can they wear costumes?

Roseann (22:28.41)

yes, costumes are highly encouraged. Please wear costumes. The only thing I have to say about that is on Sundays, just don't have your tits out. know, like be like, there's kids around, know, trying to catch a case. But other than that, like, let your free flag fly. This is the best time to dress up cosplay, whatever you want. It's Halloween, you know, in our eyes, it's always Halloween. So we'll have lots of people dressed up. No need to be embarrassed.

Syd (22:33.723)

you

Syd (22:41.902)

Yeah.

Roseann (22:58.114)

Go all out, really.

Syd (23:00.273)

Should they bring warm clothes too, just in case?

Roseann (23:03.906)

Yeah, I mean, always come prepared. I have no idea what the weather's going to be like. September is kind of back and forth, you know, it's, usually pretty nice. I just, but I, it's also going to be in near Asheville and I'm not from there. So where I'm from, it's yeah, it's, it's usually really pleasant weather, like seven news or so, but I just check the weather ahead of time. See if you need to bring anything. I was just staying in a cabin. they're all like summer camp cabins.

Syd (23:07.269)

Yeah, what it's gonna be like.

Syd (23:16.399)

Yeah, so you're not sure?

Syd (23:26.65)

Yeah.

Roseann (23:32.504)

So just to warn you, there's not like AC and heat in these cabins. So if it looks like it's gonna be a hundred degrees for some reason, you may want to bring a fan, which it shouldn't, but you know, just keep your eye out. Yeah.

Syd (23:32.848)

you

Syd (23:36.901)

Yeah.

Syd (23:42.224)

Yeah.

Syd (23:45.805)

You never know. I would say for sure keep an eye out on the weather too, just so you kind of have an idea. Is there anything else? go ahead. No, no, no.

Roseann (23:55.212)

Yep. I will say, sorry about the weather. It is a rain or shine event. I will say that there are pavilions like throughout. There's lots of places to hide out if it does rain, but don't be afraid to come if it rains. We're still doing, we're still partying. There's no reason to be worried. We're not afraid to get wet. And even if you are, there's places to hide. Yeah. I mean, it's like, it feels like a public park there. Like they have,

Syd (24:04.001)

Okay

Syd (24:08.965)

Yeah.

Syd (24:15.742)

I was gonna say it's just water.

Roseann (24:25.248)

even a playground and like picnic tables and things. there's there's spots to sit down and rest to in the shade if it's super sunny. But yeah, just just so you know, it is rain or shine. Figured I should throw that out there.

Syd (24:26.762)

wow.

Syd (24:39.227)

Do you have any advice of anything they should bring with them?

Roseann (24:43.342)

Cash for sure. Here, let me run. We actually on our website, there's a page called What to Bring. So if you need to kind of double check that before you leave the house, there's a list. So the main headers are closed -toed shoes, ID or driver's license. So if you want to drink, I don't know if Cyanide Suspension is going to be offering hook suspension. If they are, they will require an ID. And if you're getting a tattoo, of course, that will require an ID.

Syd (24:50.42)

that's awesome.

Syd (25:11.525)

Yeah, you'll have to have one.

Roseann (25:13.228)

Yeah. Cash, because a lot of the vendors are going to probably plan to take online transactions, but some of them may not. Some may be art students that haven't set that up yet, or we may have bad Wi -Fi. It depends. So just bring cash. And if you want to tip anyone, too, if there's a fun actor or a musician that you love, that's encouraged. It's not required, but of course, they like that. Yeah.

Syd (25:22.512)

Yeah.

Syd (25:38.704)

Yeah.

I'm sure.

Roseann (25:42.798)

We've got costume, appropriate clothing, which I already mentioned just on Sundays. And then if you have any special accommodations, try to reach out to us ahead of time. But if you show up and realize, I have a wheelchair or something, how do I get around? Make sure to find one of the event staff so we can kind of help you. This isn't a great hand. It's not a super handicap accessible area. There are, you know,

Syd (25:46.768)

Yeah.

Roseann (26:12.236)

roads and things, but there's also gravel and grass. So just be aware of that. The vendors will be in a grass field. So if it's going to be difficult to maneuver that, just consider other modes of transportation, I guess. And then do not bring animals is the other thing on here, which because we have a lot of... We usually, right now it's pending. I'm still trying to get some...

Syd (26:14.51)

Bye.

Syd (26:31.134)

that's a good one.

Roseann (26:40.896)

reptiles and maybe some some puppies or kittens there. But right now it's pending. But at our other events, we do have animals there already. And so if you bring a dog and it starts trying to attack a kitten, that would be horrible. We don't want that. Yeah. Or if there's a snake and it spooks your animal, know, and there's also loud, loud noises and flashing lights. And it's just not not a great place to just bring pets, which is unfortunate because some of our venues

Syd (26:47.963)

Yeah.

Syd (26:55.139)

yeah, that's not...

Syd (26:59.739)

Yeah.

Syd (27:07.952)

Yeah.

Roseann (27:10.894)

you know, encourage that and it's dog to allow out or, you know, but unfortunately for haunt fest events, it's just not safe. Just don't do it. We don't want anyone getting hurt or upset over a situation like that. So, but yeah, those are the main points though.

Syd (27:12.582)

Yeah.

Syd (27:26.223)

Yeah, no that's a good point. That's a good point. So this is more a question for you, so what are you looking forward to this Halloween?

Roseann (27:36.854)

It's Halloween? gosh, so many things. So one of the things about HauntFest that drives people crazy is that we don't do things in October unless it's like a promo event. I mean, because we'll do a Halloween party, sure, set up a table. the reason, part of the reason that I do this is because I want to have fun in October. So...

Syd (27:37.936)

Yeah.

you

Syd (27:48.432)

Hmm.

Syd (27:54.053)

Yeah.

Syd (28:01.112)

Mm -hmm.

Roseann (28:03.066)

I'm gonna be visiting all sorts of different haunted attractions. I've never been to Lake Joy Trails of Terror, which is the group that came and helped with our haunts. we've got to go see them. They apparently have an incredible rated R option, which is, you know, they can touch you, do crazy stuff. Not like that one guy, I don't remember his name, that's like actually talking to people. Yeah, but...

Syd (28:11.596)

That's cool.

Syd (28:20.527)

Hmm.

Syd (28:26.595)

I know who you're talking about.

Roseann (28:29.996)

I am excited to see apparently they you get pretty bloody and stuff going through there. So that's that's one thing. My family, we like to plan to go for a weekend somewhere out of town and just hit as many as we can. We love home haunts because we've had our own home haunt and those can be some of the most actually scary experiences of your life because you half the time.

Syd (28:45.489)

That's cool.

Syd (28:49.542)

Yeah.

Syd (28:56.753)

Mm -hmm.

Roseann (28:58.412)

are like, am I actually gonna die? Because it's a home haunt. It's like, you know, there's not really regulations here, you know? What are they about to do to me? But I love it. I love that crap. Yeah.

Syd (29:02.907)

You

Syd (29:07.569)

That's a good point.

Syd (29:11.409)

Plus usually they're more creative too because they don't have a budget necessarily like a big haunt so you see some really interesting things at home haunts for sure. I'm with you.

Roseann (29:17.742)

Mm -hmm.

Yeah, one of the biggest scares. Yeah. One of the biggest scares I've ever seen my dad have. I mean, all of us really was just a guy in a ghillie suit, like in just in a ditch off to the side at some home haunt. He just hopped up and we thought it was grass. It's it's got us all so bad. And we've even had people at home haunts like put us in a boat in the middle of a lake with nobody else and then have like a

Syd (29:37.157)

You

you

Syd (29:47.217)

That's cool.

Roseann (29:49.696)

a ghoul come out with like a knife into the water and you're like, am I supposed to do? You can't jump out of the boat. So yeah, super creative. I love stuff like that. Never would have thought to do that, you know?

Syd (29:52.722)

wow.

Syd (29:56.398)

You

Syd (30:01.63)

Mm -hmm. Well, that's a good way to get ideas too is by going to other places and you're like, I didn't think of that or that would be creepy or how could I use that idea and change it? That's it. Yeah, no, I love home hunts. They're probably one of my favorites to actually go to just because it's like I said, it's just they're different and usually the people are doing it because they love doing it not necessarily, you know for the money because in Arizona we have some hunts that literally are just here for

Roseann (30:10.167)

yeah.

Syd (30:29.305)

you know, for the money and business and you can tell the difference. It's like you're just a number when you go through, but there are some really creative home haunts here, so I can agree with you. That's a lot of fun. I tell people all the time, don't spend a thousand dollars going to a haunt here. Go see some of those home haunts and support those guys, because some of them are really, really cool.

Roseann (30:50.526)

Mm -hmm and extra extra scary. Let me tell you Yeah

Syd (30:54.747)

yeah, yeah. Well, like, I like how you brought up, there's no, like, rules necessarily. They have to follow and stuff. I didn't think of that, but it's like, yeah, that's actually a good point. Now that is kind of creepy, knowing that. Yeah.

Roseann (31:06.318)

I mean, they kind of, they should, but like, you know, they're not like official, so they don't really do all that.

Syd (31:14.21)

They don't have to fire, you know, fire inspection and all that. Or safety inspection.

Roseann (31:17.634)

Yep. Going to some really sketchy places. I mean, I'm sure that even the boat thing, that would be against all sorts of rules because there's no exit. You're just stuck in a boat. But that's what I find fun. I like that extra adrenaline rush you get of, I could die right now. Like for real. Yeah.

Syd (31:25.229)

I'm sure.

Syd (31:33.243)

you

Syd (31:38.193)

Yeah, that's true. That's true. So are you gonna dress up for Halloween? And if so, what are you gonna be this Halloween?

Roseann (31:48.974)

I usually... Okay. So I do so many Halloween events that I like to mix it up and I'll wear like 20 different costumes in a month. Which is way too many. But one of them, which is just silly, I went to... I don't know if you've ever heard of Junk Man's Daughter's Brother or Junk Man's Daughter. It's like a... Just a weird funky shop. There's a few of them in Georgia. I'm not sure how far it...

Syd (31:55.579)

You

Roseann (32:18.09)

it goes, but they had headbands that had the rat from Ratatouille on top and it had little clips on its hands so it could hold your hair up like it was grabbing your hair and moving your... and I was like, I know what I have to be. Like this is... I cannot not get this. So that's one of them, because I'm going to be that guy, the cook. And then I don't know yet for the other...

Syd (32:40.971)

You

Roseann (32:47.726)

the other 19 that I'll probably have. But it's something real spooky. Last year I was really... Yeah.

Syd (32:50.353)

The other costume.

Yeah, I get that. There's so many that like, when am I gonna be this year? I don't even know where I'm gonna be on Halloween, so I have no idea. So yeah, I get that.

Roseann (33:03.776)

I definitely want to do something wacky though. Because last year I painted myself entirely blue. I don't know what I was thinking. And I was trying to be a genie, but for some reason I decided to wear like a rock and roll wig with it. So I was kind of like rock and roll genie, all blue and everything. And went downtown Athens and

That was a blast. And I kept finding other people that were like a completely different color. Like someone was all pointed red. And so we got pictures together. So I want to do something like that again. That was a lot of fun. It was so strange. But it was, you you leave a little bit of residue everywhere you go and leave your mark.

Syd (33:30.641)

you

Syd (33:42.577)

Yeah. That's true.

Syd (33:47.419)

That's true, and we're zombies sometimes, especially my dad. I usually wear gloves, but he'll put white on his hands. And then when you're walking around the events or wherever, see fingerprints everywhere and you're like, oi. You're like, hopefully the venue doesn't mind having zombie hand prints everywhere. It's like, that.

Roseann (34:05.514)

Yep, and if you got stuff on your lips like by the end of the night because I don't know we have a wild rumpus in Athens which is a really fun night in October where everyone goes downtown there's a huge parade and everything so I had a few few beers and my whole like it was supposed to be blue but I just had like a skin color around my mouth and everything else was blue it was horrific horrendous

Syd (34:11.109)

huh.

Syd (34:29.713)

I hate how that happens. Or even your eyes too, like when you blink and stuff, then the color will leave and you just have like normal looking eyes and yeah, it's very interesting.

Roseann (34:35.902)

Yeah, I'll have to think about that for next time.

Roseann (34:42.593)

Bye.

yeah. Yeah. So what's your plan? What are your costume ideas?

Syd (34:51.913)

This year, actually, we're gonna be helping put on an event here at Rawhide, which is a western town. They're gonna be doing like a shooting zombie kind of a thing. It's not like airsoft or anything. It's more of like kind of like that laser technology. So you're not actually getting hit and having to, you know, have boo -boos when you get home from airsoft and paintball. But we're helping with that. So I'm not sure if I don't think I'll don't even know if I'll get to dress up this year.

Roseann (35:03.768)

Mm -hmm.

Syd (35:20.697)

I might, cause we're helping run it. Yeah. I don't know. If so, I'll probably be a zombie.

Roseann (35:21.23)

I don't know. Well you gotta dress up as a staff member. Yeah. You gotta, like cowboy zombie or something.

Syd (35:30.117)

There you go, yep, yep. Most likely I'll probably end up being that if I get to dress up this year. I know, it's like,

Roseann (35:36.27)

And you can have like a bullet wound in your forehead or something if you want to make it spooky. Yeah.

Syd (35:41.935)

Yeah, something. Yeah, I'll have to have something. Well, it's funny, the guy who's hiring this, he even said something like that, you all could dress up too, and I was like, okay. So I was like, you also want us to be in character. Because I mean, that's what we're known for, so it's like, okay, okay. So probably will get to dress up, and if so, it'll be a zombie, which we're pretty much every year, so it's not necessarily that exciting, but you know, hey, we're good at it, so. Yeah.

Roseann (35:58.399)

haha

Roseann (36:07.691)

I love a good zombie. For our home lawn every year, I always wanted to be a zombie. It's just so much fun. You just drag your limbs around and moan. Like... Yeah.

Syd (36:16.367)

Yeah? Yeah? It's a lot of fun and it freaks people out even to this day like I don't think the zombie will ever go out of style.

Roseann (36:21.518)

Thank you.

Yep. Yep. I had a lot of fun with zombie makeup too. Those are those are a blast. Cause you can pretty much do anything. Like, I mean, even seeing the last of us now, now you can put mushrooms on your face and be a zombie. Like, it's - there's so much variety.

Syd (36:30.289)

Mm -hmm...

Syd (36:41.741)

Mm -hmm. Well, you can die anyway, pretty much. So like you said, could - you could be - you could have scissors coming out of your head, you could have a bullet hole, I mean like, the - you could have been attacked by a cat. I mean like, seriously, it's like you could almost do anything. So it is creative. Mm -hmm. That's for sure. No, the ones I don't like is when people just have white, you know, they wear white and they throw blood all over them and they say they're zombie and it's like, you just looked like you were in a ketchup fight.

Roseann (36:44.632)

Yeah.

Roseann (36:48.302)

Mm -hmm.

Roseann (36:54.208)

Exactly. Yep. Yep. As long as you look a little bit dead. It'll work.

Syd (37:11.085)

It's like, put a little bit more effort into it. Come on, come on. Yeah, right? Slim thin, you know? And they don't even have makeup on or anything. They just wear white and fro -blood and it's like, it doesn't you're not as long - Yeah! Yeah!

Roseann (37:14.188)

Yeah, yeah, they're a little green in there, a little brown. Yeah.

Roseann (37:22.901)

just wear white. I know what you're talking about. I thought you were saying they did like the white like ghost face look.

Syd (37:29.893)

Well even that's better than just when they have the white t -shirts and they just put blood in there like, I'm a zombie and you're like, mmmm

Roseann (37:32.984)

Yes.

Mm -hmm. I completely agree. think people that do that, no offense if you do that, I guess, but I feel like people that do that are like thinking too hard about looking good as a zombie. know, like zombies don't look good. It's okay. Like, be gross. Embrace the nasty.

Syd (37:47.141)

Yeah,

Syd (37:55.513)

Exactly. some dirt on. mean come on. Just get into it. It's fun.

Roseann (37:58.146)

Yeah, just roll down a hill or like, run to swamp and swim for a second before you go out.

Syd (38:05.093)

There you go, there you go. Or what they use like coffee grinds and stuff, can use different charcoal, know, just something.

Roseann (38:10.018)

Mm -hmm. Yep. You can do some nasty burn scars with oatmeal. Yeah. It's always fun.

Syd (38:15.483)

Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. That's true. And I think sometimes people will use rice for like maggots and stuff too. So there you go. There you go. Not, you know, it's not that expensive. You know, come on, just put a little effort into it. Come on, come on. So another question is, what is one of your favorite scary songs?

Roseann (38:24.5)

yeah.

Roseann (38:27.99)

Exactly.

Roseann (38:37.358)

scary songs. my god. Let's see. Does it have to be actually scary or just Halloween related?

Syd (38:38.821)

Yeah.

Yeah, Halloween related is fine.

Roseann (38:45.096)

I love Season of the Witch. That's one of my favorites. But I also love Dead Man's Party. And I actually... It's kind of a problem because I've started doing this thing. Hopefully I don't get trademarked for this. I did look it up on USTPO or whatever and it's not on there. But I keep saying that Hauntfest is a Dead Man's Party. Because I love how that sounds. It is a Dead Man's Party.

Syd (38:47.398)

that's a good song. That's a good song.

You

Syd (39:04.326)

You

Syd (39:11.119)

Well, there it is.

Roseann (39:14.454)

I always think about that song, Dead Man's Party, because we've always played it at every Halloween party we've ever had, and it's so nostalgic to me and I love it. But yeah, those are two of my tops, for sure. But do you have any favorites?

Syd (39:16.998)

Yeah.

Syd (39:26.639)

Hahaha!

Syd (39:30.225)

For sure Thriller, that one, but even just the music video was amazing. my gosh. That's just the music video and I mean even the song. It's just, it's like you can't have Halloween until you hear that song at least once. The first Hawn I worked at, they played it every, like, I don't know what was it, because we were in the graveyard, so like every, I don't know, 15, 20 minutes they would have Thriller dancers come and dance. So we would hear it like...

Roseann (39:32.94)

Yeah, absolutely. Yes.

Roseann (39:45.224)

Mm -hmm. No, I completely agree.

Roseann (39:58.428)

Mm -hmm.

Syd (39:59.589)

you know, times a night and people are like, aren't you tired of that song? And I'm like, no. If anything, I hear it and it takes back, you memories and you're like, I remember when this happened or that happened. So Thrillier for sure is a really good one. But I like Dead Man's Party too. That's a good one. I like it because I always tell people that dead know how to party. Way better than the living. yeah.

Roseann (40:07.715)

you

Roseann (40:13.022)

huh.

Roseann (40:19.405)

Thank

Yep. Exactly. Mm -hmm. Especially in HauntFest. Y 'all hear that? Ayy.

Syd (40:32.217)

Hauntfest is the dead man's party, so yeah, if you want to party, you know where to go.

Roseann (40:37.015)

If you want to show up looking like you got scissors in your eyes, that's totally fine. That's normal where we come from. It's okay. Yeah.

Syd (40:43.377)

If you're not dressed up, that's not the normal part. Then you stick out.

Roseann (40:49.292)

You don't have to wear the white t -shirt with blood on it. It's okay. We're not gonna judge you. Unless you're wearing the white t -shirt with blood on you, then we might. Just a little bit. Yeah. We oughta just bring ketchup packets for people that wear that and be like, sorry, know, squirt a little on them. Sorry, we thought - we thought that was what was happening. I I didn't realize, Sorry about that.

Syd (40:55.055)

You

And I'll be like, we're gonna catch a fight? What's going on here?

Syd (41:11.439)

Yeah, I didn't know you were a zombie. My bad, my bad. That's funny. So is there anything else you'd like to share with us before we go about HauntFest or anything coming up?

Roseann (41:25.362)

we actually just released today that we are doing a, like a speed dating type event. I think it's September 10th. Let me check. My, business partner came up with this idea. let's see. It's more of like a friend making. It's not actually dating. So if you're a horror enthusiast of any kind, or just like Halloween or you're just spooky or witchy or whatever, you will fit right in.

Syd (41:33.137)

Mmm.

Syd (41:53.752)

you

Roseann (41:54.67)

to this event. this is a little promo event, Speed Friending, spooky edition is what it's called. It will be at, gosh, I don't know how to pronounce this. It's P -L -E with the line over it, B, pleb, plebe, urban winery. And this is in Asheville and it'll be September 10th from 6 p to 8 p So.

Syd (42:08.682)

Nice

Roseann (42:20.226)

There will be a live musician you can listen to and then they'll do the speed friending where you'll, I'm sure, sit across from each other and there'll be prompted questions, et cetera. And it's at a winery. So if you can get a ticket that has the wine flight option, you can have a wine flight with your meet and greet. And then you can win at the end of a mini game free tickets to Haunt Fest. So you can bring all of the new friends that you made at this promo to the festival.

Syd (42:26.768)

Yeah.

Syd (42:43.906)

There you go.

Syd (42:48.589)

smart. There you go.

Roseann (42:50.974)

yeah, so it'll be a lot of fun. So if you want to do anything before the event, get to know some of us, that'll be a great time to do it. So that's a little tidbit. As far as the event itself, I'm not sure. Let me look at my little list of things just in case. Yeah, think we've had a lot of stuff. We will have trivia again. That was a lot of fun.

Syd (43:12.089)

Yeah, we don't want to miss anything. Yeah.

Roseann (43:19.32)

horror related trivia, which includes anything from movies, books, or just horror lore from different countries. There's lots of different categories. So anything that's related to that, if you have any sort of knowledge, you should come do trivia. And we don't have an official time set for that, but when we release the event schedules that have all the specific things on it, it'll be on there. Let's see.

Syd (43:28.891)

That's cool.

Roseann (43:48.65)

I think that's most of... Costumes. I forgot to mention this when I said to wear costumes. We will have costume contests. So even more reason to come in costume. It'll be a great time to do that. And on Sunday we'll also have a mini monsters costume contest. So that'll be age limited. So, yeah. If you're a parent, dress your kid up cute or scary and we'll have surprises for him.

Syd (43:56.236)

nice.

Syd (44:06.084)

And it's cool.

Syd (44:15.367)

That's so cool.

Roseann (44:16.734)

One thing that I forgot to mention that's actually quite fun and important. We have gem mining this time, which never would have expected to have gem mining, but the mobile gem mine is the group that's coming and doing this. And I'm not quite sure how much it costs. I'm sure it's not much to go mine in the sand and get you some gems. So that'll be at the event as well.

Syd (44:31.056)

Alright.

Syd (44:40.998)

Hmm

Roseann (44:43.406)

They'll be at this event and Chris Massacre. So either of those. Yeah.

Syd (44:47.609)

Nice. That sounds fun. So yeah, you literally have a lot going on.

Roseann (44:53.334)

Yeah, there's so much it kills me because I always feel terrible forgetting these little things, but it's like, they're big things, but it's so hard to keep it all in there. Unless I probably have COVID brain right now. Yeah.

Syd (44:58.939)

But there's so much. Remember everything. Well, and then also you're under the weather. That doesn't help. Well, as good as me, they can also find out again if you missed anything or more information on the website. And I also know you have Facebook and Instagram and all that, too. So again, if you're interested, for sure, follow and like and subscribe so you can see all the stuff that's coming up or any updates and news about it.

Roseann (45:19.192)

Yes.

Roseann (45:28.0)

Absolutely. We should be releasing a promo video soon too. So that'll be have a lot more information about the kinds of things that we'll be offering. Our Facebook, by the way, is HauntFest, LLC. And we have a Facebook group for this event. It should be HauntFest North Carolina. So that's where we will post a lot of the highlights of vendors and activities throughout the coming weeks. And then our Instagram is at hauntfest .athens.

Yes, I know we're not in Athens right now. All right. Somebody stole the HauntFest tag and I'm waiting to get it back. All right. Well, we'll get that. But until then, it's hauntfest .athens. No, it is not specific to Athens. It is for all of the events. So don't be afraid to follow. Yes. Which by the way, the other HauntFest is in Arizona. Do you know anything about that?

Syd (46:05.531)

man.

Syd (46:11.185)

For everybody.

Syd (46:21.426)

I didn't know we had one here. I know we have Horror Fest. I know there's that one. Hmm.

Roseann (46:24.726)

I think it's limits. Yeah, if you should look up HauntFest on Instagram and see if you recognize it. Yeah, apparently there was a sign up last year somewhere, but yeah, I don't know much about it.

Syd (46:30.501)

what there is. I'll have to.

Huh. It wouldn't surprise me. There's so many things that happen here. It's not all the time you hear about everything. But I know there is a horror fest.

Roseann (46:44.502)

Yeah, I was... yeah? Is that in Arizona too?

Syd (46:48.055)

Mm -hmm. Yeah, that's in Arizona. It's I think it's its third year this year. Yeah, it's a little convention so We went last year is pretty fun So I don't think we'll be able to make it this year because we're too busy But yeah, Horror Fest is is something. Yeah, Haunt Fest. I'll have to see about that I'll have to look that up and see if there is something here. It again. It wouldn't surprise me

Roseann (47:12.598)

Yeah, it would be great. I would love to go to Arizona and do some trips around and find some good haunts. I know you've got some good ones over there.

Syd (47:20.741)

Yeah, we have some really good ones. Ones that I would recommend is we actually have a haunted slaughterhouse. It's in Tucson, but it's really, that's, I would say probably our top haunt is that one because it's actually haunted. It was on Ghost Adventures and it's a big, I mean, it's a nice location. It really is.

Roseann (47:34.721)

Good.

Roseann (47:38.765)

I

Roseann (47:43.756)

I actually have family that lives near Tucson, so that would be perfect.

Syd (47:47.247)

Yeah, if you have the chance, that one's for sure one to check out. Another one is Sanctum of Horror, that's a family -owned one, and they do it in a parking lot, but it's really you couldn't tell. It's really, really good. Yeah.

Roseann (47:51.406)

That's

Mm

Roseann (47:59.906)

That's great. I'll definitely keep those in mind. Hopefully I'll be able to make it out there in October. We'll have to see.

Syd (48:05.573)

Well, you have my number, so if you ever aren't, you know, just message me and let me know. I'll tell you where to go. Yeah, for sure. Well, like, hey, if you're ever in Arizona, let me know. Well, thank you so much for your time and for sharing your spooky event with us and all that's coming up. I'm really happy to hear that you have a lot going on, because like I said last time I talked to you.

Roseann (48:11.776)

Absolutely. I appreciate the recommendations.

Roseann (48:19.205)

yeah.

Syd (48:31.375)

I know that was something you talking about was expanding and I hope you get to expand even more. Like I said, maybe one day you'll even come here. That'd be really fun.

Roseann (48:38.07)

Yeah. I'll have to butt heads with the other hot vest and see what happens.

Syd (48:42.737)

That's yeah, it's like I really have to look that up. I'll have to yeah. Well, I have your number I'll tell you if I I find out I'll save you on my phone Well, thank you so much and I'm sorry about all the confusion and all that with the times and all that I'm glad we were able to make it work and have you on the show and I sure will probably have you again Anytime you want to be on just let me know

Roseann (48:44.961)

Yeah.

Roseann (48:52.173)

Please do.

Roseann (49:06.766)

Well, I really appreciate it.

Alright, well thanks. It's been fun. You too. It's my dream, yeah. Well have a good day.

Syd (49:11.963)

Yeah, thank you. Have a great night or day, whatever what your hours are. Yeah, I'll be night for you. All right, well have a good night. Yeah. Thank you.
